Subject Line: Proposal – Blueprint Plans Graphical Information Designer
Project Overview
Grow Good Hawaiʻi is seeking a designer with experience in information design, infographics, or visual communication to help translate agroforestry “blueprint plans” into clear, visually compelling educational materials.
These plans communicate layered planting systems that combine trees, shrubs, and groundcover crops within the same space (agroforestry). The designer’s role is to organize plant information, garden layouts, and key characteristics into visuals that are intuitive and easy to understand for a broad audience.
The objective is not simply to make the information look “nice” or “beautiful,” but to use visual elements to make the information easy to understand and remember.
Project Approach
We are seeking a designer who could build a visual system that we can adapt to any blueprint plans we have or create in the future. This system could include chart and diagram templates, plant icons, page layout, mapping style, and a color handbook. This project will proceed in two phases:
Phase 1 — Design System + Pilot Plan
Design 1 complete blueprint and establish a visual system that can be used for other blueprint plans.
Phase 2 — Application Across Additional Plans
Apply that system to the design and layout of an additional 9 plans, focusing primarily on:
- 2D maps (plant placement)
- 3D or layered diagrams (spatial relationships across vertical planes and within planes)
- Minimal layout adjustments
Content for later plans will be largely prepared by our team.
Note: Each blueprint includes several components: overall layout, information systems (icons, legends, tables), 2D maps, and conceptual layered diagrams (see reference material). We anticipate that layout and information systems will be developed once and reused across plans, while the primary custom work for subsequent plans will focus on maps and layered diagrams
Scope of Work
- Design multi-page blueprint-style documents (8.5 × 11 format), ~10-12 pages each
- Create clear 2D maps of plant placement
- Develop diagrams that illustrate layered planting systems
- Design visual legends, icons, and labeling systems
- Organize plant lists, timelines, and reference information
- Iterate based on feedback
- Prepare final assets for digital and print use
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in information design or infographics
- Ability to simplify complex information visually
Strong layout and visual hierarchy skills
Experience creating educational or explanatory graphics - Experience with ecological, agricultural, or architectural graphics is a plus but not required.
Proposal Requirements
Please include:
- Introduction – brief background
- Relevant Work – portfolio examples (links are fine)
- Approach – a brief description of how you translate complex information into visuals
- Timeline – for initial visual system and template design and subsequent plans
- Pricing – for (1) design system + pilot plan and (2) each additional plan
- References (optional)
Reference Materials
Sample materials are included to illustrate the type of content and visual challenges involved in this project. These are drafts intended to provide context, not final design direction.
Included examples:
- Figure 1. A conceptual layered diagram illustrating vertical plant relationships (from a native plant design reference; our systems include food bearing plants in much denser configurations, but we are looking for a similar 3-D image to help readers understand maps and concepts)
- Figures 2 and 3. Sample 2D plot maps of herbaceous layer and tree/shrub layer.
